Its the eco friendly, baby friendly, Mama Gaia friendly way to feed your bubba & give them the best start in life.
But... what if you can’t breast feed for whatever reason?
Arabella is 6 weeks old today (yay! its gone so fast!) and so far she’s only had the tiniest bit of formula when she was in hospital because my colostrum wasn’t enough to satisfy her. She was screaming for hours before one of the midwives came in & gave her a bottle of formula. She’s a hungry little bunnikens that’s for sure...!
Anywho, since then, thanks to the amazing breast draining capabilities of the Medela & Philips Avent (more on that later) I have been able to continue feeding Arabella with breastmilk. I even have a freezer full of it because I am producing so much (see my post Recipe: Creating a Dairy Goddess for more info on how to be a veritable cow for your precious bubba). She has been gaining weight beautifully, growing nicely & all is well (except when I drink coffee by accident... see my previous post for a giggle about THAT little incident!)
The chemists only stock Karicare & S26 Gold which are far from organic (don’t even get me started!) so I was coming up well & truly short of what I wanted for Arabella.
Turns out it is a non issue for now because I am Miss Squeezy The Ultimate Dairy Goddess...for the moment.
But for those of us that can’t breastfeed due to time constraints, heavy training regimens, stress levels or returning to work, here is a list of organic baby & infant formulas I’ve found here in Australia that you can purchase. Its probably easier to buy them online as some of these are hard to find however it is worth doing so because you are giving your precious one a better start in life.
Chemicals, toxins, pesticides, synthetics substances & genetically modified foods abound in this day and age. Babies consume more food per unit of body weight than the national average which means they are at risk of absorbing more of these toxic substances than any of us. Combine that with the fact that their immune systems are only just developing, their organs are also continuing to develop as is their nervous system, digestive system & renal system. They’re BABIES after all...that means they’re NOT adults in miniature form. They are still growing and developing.
Wouldn’t it therefore be a wise idea to ensure that they are protected as much as possible from the toxicity present is so many foods?
Did you know that a well known brand of infant formula uses genetically modified soy? And doesn’t disclose it on the label?
Did you know that an awful lot of non-organic brands of infant formula have derived the DHA and ARA fatty acids needed for infant formula from petro-chemical substance, Hexane?
What is hexane? It’s a petroleum derivative that’s found in glue and gasoline and has recently been used in infant formula to help obtain the DHA and ARA fatty acids from fermented algae and fungus. Since breast milk is packed with DHA and ARA, there has been a recent drive to get these components into formula which is all well & good except they’re using petrochemicals to do so.
Consider that... you’re feeding your newborn baby something laced with petro-chemicals.
Don’t know about you but that makes me sick to my stomach.
I don’t even use Vicks Vaporub with Arabella because its based on Vaseline which is a petro-chemical derivative also (actually I am in the process of perfecting my own homemade recipe of something like Vicks for use instead using organic beeswax and almond oils to create a salve base - can’t wait to see how it turns out!)
Another thing to be accutely aware of with babies is the packaging of foods, in particular formulas. I’m sure you’re familiar with the dangers of BPA in plastics etc which is why there is now a wide variety of BPA free plastic bottles available for nursing babies. Great stuff!
However, be careful when buying Infant Formulas and later on when moving onto solids that the packaging is also BPA free. Infant formula tins often use a glue that contains BPA which leaches into the formula. Also, alot of the plastic lids on these tins also contain BPA. Babies are at risk of absorbing more of this chemical than adults because of their sensitive & under developed immune systems.
So, here are all the organic infant formulas I can find here in Australia... I have also included product review sites for you to look at so you know what’s being said by Eco Mums country wide about these products...
Bellamys Organic Infant Formula (Tasmanian)
Holle Organic Infant formula - Milk Based (European)
Holle Organic Infant Formula - Goat Milk Based
Cows milk is one of the best known ways to develop allergies in babies. There are something like 25 - 30 antigenic primary proteins in milk & allergic reactions are caused by the body responding negatively to one or more of these many proteins.
In addition, cows milk is difficult to digest as the fat molecules are larger than that of goats milk. Even smaller still are the fat molecules found in breastmilk - that is why it is so easy for babies to digest. Its tailor made just for them & the fat molecules contained therein are the perfect size for developing bubbas. Cows are a lot bigger = bigger fat molecules = hard for little bubbas’ ping pong ball sized tummies to digest. Get it? (simple right?)
There has even been evidence from studies conducted that cows milk could be responsible for the development of chronic diseases. For more information on this, click here
An old friend who is a Natropath once told me that when she was raising her kids she didn’t ever give them cows milk. She never drank it whilst breastfeeding & never had it in the house. They were healthy as anything. Then, they would go to visit their well meaning grandparents who would force them to drink a huge tumbler (400ml+) of cows milk before going back home.
When the kids arrived back home, all these allergic type symptoms would begin to flare up; increased mucas in nose & sinus caveties, itching & redness and increased excema, phlegm buildup at the back of the nose and throat etc.
It took her a little while to work out that her kids were being fed cows milk whilst visiting their grandparents. A firm conversation was had in order to ensure this didn’t happen again...

Babynat Organic Infant Formula (UK based - available in Australia) was certified organic however warnings were issued in UK & Hong Kong regarding the product. The Centre for Food Safety said people should not consume Babynat Organic Infant Milk, made by Vitahermine, after it tested positive for enterobacter sakazakii.
Heinz has launched a PARTIALLY organic product (96%) however they use a chemical process for extraction of DHA and ARA fatty acids :-(
The most important thing to remember (and ultimately the reason for this post) is that just because somethings says its organic doesn’t mean that there is no chemicals involved at any point in the production or manufacturing process (i.e. Heinz products above).
Research is really important if you want to make sure you’re giving the best to your baby.
Hence the reason for this blog!
Hope this post is useful for you.
