Creating your own detergents is not as difficult as it might sound. The good news is that most of the ingredients you need are already in your kitchen cupboard.
The basics that you are going to use are borax, soda and soap. Commercial cleaning products consist of potentially volatile chemicals that can cause allergies and skin reactions so its best to do away with them - pronto!
Super Strong Laundry Detergent
You will need:
1 cup washing soda
1 cup borax
1 pure or castile soap bar
4 cups of water
Mix the washing soda and borax together and let stand.
Cut up the soap bar in small chunks by using hand grater or food processor.
Place water into a pan and bring to boil. Lower heat and stir in grated soap. Allow the soap to melt completely which takes about 15 minutes. Make sure you stir continuously.
When the soap has melted and dissolved, remove the pan from the stove and add the soda and borax mixture.
Again you should stir constantly whilst adding this mixture a few tablespoons at a time; otherwise the texture will become grainy. You are aiming towards a smooth, somewhat creamy consistency
Get a couple of mason jars and pour enough into each jar to fill it one quarter full. Then top up with water. Let this mixture stand for around 4 hours.
After a few hours, you will notice several layers have formed. Pour into a food processor or using a stick blender, blend it until it the mixture becomes creamy. Pour into a wide neck jar or container for use.
You will need only 1 table spoon of this detergent for a fully loaded 6kg washing machine.

- 3 cups of washing soda
- 1â4 cup coarse salt and
- 1â2 citric acid (it will enhance the cleaning qualities of the detergent).
Place everything in the blender and you will have the perfect cleaning solution!
The powdered detergent is enough for around 15 loads of laundering.
Spice It Up!
Make your detergent more sophisticated by adding different spices in Essential Oil or Essence form, like cinnamon or vanilla.
Adding Essential Oils like Tea Tree, Eucalyptus and even Lavender can add a beneficial hygienic element to your laundering and are great for anti-bacterial use after illness.
