I said to myself, I said "Self, there must be a better way, surely!"
So, in true Eco Mum style I have hunted out some easy peasy options for you to make the process easier.
Now, I’m not suggesting you go for terry towelling, pins & pilchers (unless that moves you but for me it was dangerous!) however the cloth nappy thing is not as hard as you might think.
There are great new designs on the market now, shaped like disposables with easy to use snaps, velcro closures and the most beautiful designs. There is quite a cult following developing now and women have been known to get nasty over designs that are no longer available. Nappies are becoming collectors items!

Tips & Accessories Make Cloth Nappies a Breeze...
- Purchase Tots compostable & flushable nappy liners. Use these on top of the inserts inside the nappy. When changing, simply pull them out & flush down the toilet with all the solids. Easy!
- Get a plumber to fit a “t piece” to your toilet cistern tap (tap that sits beside toilet bowl). Fit a hose with a jet spray attachment to the “t piece” to wash the solids down the toilet. Makes life a lot easier than doing it by hand in a bucket!
- Have 2 lidded buckets near your change table or in the bathroom filled with bicarb soda & vinegar as an eco friendly soaking solution which won’t harm bubs if she gets into it (1/2 cup bicarb & 1 cup vinegar in bucket hot water). Change bubs nappy, flush the liner or wash the solids off & simply put the insert in one bucket & the outer nappy shell in the other.
- Once a day in the evenings, empty the above nappy buckets into the washing machine (with all the other baby accoutrements that have been spewed on) & set the cycle to wash over night. Use a green & grey water friendly laundry detergent like EnviroClean. This means you’re using “shoulder rates” for electricity which are a lot cheaper then normal rates. Saves you $$$! Get up in the morning & hang them out for the day to dry. Easy!
For those that just can’t do the cloth thing, here is a list of some of the best biodegradable disposable options for you. Note that NO ONE as yet has produced a 100% biodegradable nappy. Any claims to the contrary are false (as at 2 May 2011).
My Personal Faves are The Eco Genesis nappies.
I used the Eco Genesis nappies which are 98% bio-degradable & proved to be excellent for my little one whilst she was too small for her cloth nappies. No leakage out the sides, great absorption, easy to fit & very reasonably priced through the distributor in QLD I found. They work out at 50c per nappy which is about the same for Huggies or other brands that are not at all environmentally friendly.

Other Bio-degradable options include:
Nature Baby Care are now available at Coles Supermarkets (size 7kgs & up)
Moltex Eco Nappies
Given that the cost of bio-degradables is now about the same as some of the more well known brands, there is no excuse for not doing the right thing by Mama Gaia in relation to your babies bottie.
Be a true Eco Mama Warrior Goddess & get on board the nappy bandwagon.
Love and nappies,
