Single tinctures or normal tinctures are made with one amount of herb to a certain amount of alcohol. They are very effective and strong and are considered medicinal strength.
One of my favourite things to do is increase the strength and medicinal qualities in a tincture by repeating the “maceration” process (soaking the herb for 6 – 8 weeks is called “macerating”) several times with new herbs, using the same alcohol solution over and over. This means that the solution absorbs the medicinal qualities from the herbs repeatedly, increasing the strength and concentration.
When my anxiety was quite bad, just after having my daughter my hormones was all a mess. There was little I could do for my panic attacks or anxious moments except supplement and have herbal infusions and breathe through them.
That’s when I stumbled across the idea of a Triple Tincture – using Lemon Balm. Genius!
I would take this triple tincture, usually 5 drops was enough, under the tongue when I was feeling panicked and would almost immediately start to feel calmer and more able to centre myself. It was really quite magical.
I searched everywhere for the place where I first found out how to do this but I can not find the post online.
Here is my take on how to create your own, homemade Panic Stop Juice, The Triple Tincture of Lemon Balm.
3 cups of dried lemon balm herb
1 cup of 40% vodka
1 250ml glass jar with lid
Pour the dried herb into the glass jar, filling to the top. Press down and pack it in tightly.
Pour over the vodka or brandy (whatever you choose – the stronger the alcohol, the better quality the result) until you reach the very top rim of the jar. Place the lid on the jar and shake it vigorously.
Place in a cool, dark cupboard shaking everyday for 2 – 3 weeks. Allow the herb to macerate or soak in the alcohol for 6 weeks. Check it every so often by lifting the lid and top up the vodka where required to keep the jar really full.
When the 6 weeks is up, strain out the herbs from the alcohol solution ensure you squeeze out every drop you can.
Keep the alcohol solution and compost the herb.
Let this macerate or sit for another 6 weeks, shaking every day for the first 2 weeks.
Then, repeat the straining process again, as above. Keep the alcohol solution and do the whole thing over again. So, pack the jar with herb, fill with the solution, top it up, macerate for 6 weeks.
After the final 6 weeks is over, compost the last lot of herb and pour the alcohol solution into dropper bottles. Label the date, the solution name and ingredients.
I know – it sounds like a lengthy process and quite tedious but it is really worth it if you suffer a lot from anxiety, panic attacks or uncrontrollable rages. Its such an amazingly calming tonic and you only need a few drops!
I can’t recommend this enough so if you have the time, patience and inclination, give it a go. You won’t be sorry you did.
Love and Lemon Balm,
