He is now getting older (he is 12 years old now) and he can't handle so much rich food - nor should he. He is also suffering arthritis and has Cushing's Disease so there are things we must do to manage these conditions for his ongoing comfort... and morsels of blue vein, triple cream brie cheese is not one of them!
So this got me to thinking - what can I make for our dearest old poochey friend that is healthy for him, won't break the bank and easily digested?
The Eco Mum Homemade Dog Food Recipe
2kgs lean beef mince - raw
1 cup soaked Nettle herb (for vitamins & alkalising)
1/2 cup soaked Dandelion herb (great for digestion in older dogs)
1 cup of brown rice, cooked (for carbs)
1 cup grated organic carrot (fills them up with nutrients, not fillers)
Pinch of kelp powder (for essential trace minerals)
Pinch of ground Celtic Sea Salt or Himalayan Rock Salt (for essential trace minerals)
2 - 3 pinches of vitamin C powder
10 fish oil capsules, split open or 3 tbsps Fish Oil (for fatty acids)
5 Glucosamine supplements, ground up (for arthritis)
3 or 4 chicken necks, ground into a mash
Lambs liver, ground into a mash (for iron)
1 tsp Backstrap Molasses (for iron and B vitamins)
Step 1. Place all ingredients into a food processor and pulse until well mixed. You may have to do this in several batches.
Step 2. Freeze in week sized portions to avoid it going rancid before use. We give Brutus about 1 - 1 1/2 cups each night for dinner.
The Stinging Nettle that has been soaked is from our Infusions so we are using it up and giving Brutus healthy, real food vitamins. Its also a liver and blood cleanser so helps with his Cushing's Disease and energy levels.
The Dandelion (we also add Burdock for his Cushing's Disease) helps with his digestion. He's getting old now and its important for his body to not have any stress. Easier digestion is a good way to assist him in his old age.
We were told by our vet that he could take human supplements and to include things for his arthritis and fish oils for his cognitive function (he was going to the toilet inside without realising where he was).
He's been doing great on this recipe. We have kept the Chemo-Therapy at bay for his Cushing's Disease and we are happy that he is on a REAL food diet. It makes us smile :-)
