Supermarket Eco Activism!

PictureMoney is power
I was wondering around my local Coles supermarket today trying to see how many stock items have at least one “green”, eco or certified organic choice available.

End result? Not many.

In particular, I noticed that Coles doesn’t stock any newborn nappies that are are environmentally friendly or bio-degradable. Neither do they stock ANY green options in the feminine hygiene department.

So I thought “Right! Time for you lot to step up!”

75 BILLION sanitary products end up as landfill EVERY YEAR (isn’t that horrendous?!) and most of them will still be sitting there 1000 years from now. Imagine what future archaeologists will be digging up from our time on this earth... makes me queasy thinking about it. Used nappies & sanitary hygiene products... they’ll think we were the most dirty, selfish & destructive civilisation that has ever lived. And they wouldn’t be far from the truth!

I sent Coles a request for stock letter today via their online feedback forum http://www.coles.com.au/Coles/Contact-Us.aspx and am also posting a copy of the same letter to my local store manager.

If my response isn’t satisfactory then I will post a copy of the letter, the un-satisfactory response to the head of Coles Supermarkets. If that response isn’t satisfactory, then I will send the same again to the Head of Wesfarmers. If that isn’t satisfactory, I will send a copy of all correspondence to Oxfam, Fairtrade Australia, Greening Australia, Landcare Australia and any other public body that will create some negative publicity for our supermarket giants.

Then they’ll move!

Its not as hard as it sounds - I have set up an Activism page on The Eco Mum website http://www.theecomum.com/activism.html which will have copies of letters to use, address and contact details for the supermarkets in Australia. All you need to do is copy a letter of your choice, select which supermarket you want to target (go for ALL of them!) and press SEND.

Obviously, printed, signed & posted letters have better effect however remember to use recycled paper! (we only have recycled in this house - I made sure my husband put back the non-recycled stuff despite his groaning).

Go on - be a REAL Eco Warrior Goddess and give those supermarket giants something to think about... namely, losing your custom & cash-ola.

Love and cheeky grins,
The Eco Mum xo
