But there IS more to that post baby belly of yours and when you find out just what it CAN do for you, you'll never frown at it in the mirror again!
Ever taken anti-biotics?
In this day and age of âa pill for every illâ I am sure youâve taken them on more than one occasion.
Hereâs what they DONâT TELL YOU about prescription anti-biotics... They. Play. HAVOC. With. Your. EMOTIONS!
Ever wondered how or why you experience that fluttery feeling of âbutterflies in your tummyâ? Why does your gut instinct tell you what is right or wrong? How is it that your gut is the seat of your intuition?
The gut is the SECOND BRAIN.
There is SO much more to the gut (oesophagus ,stomach, colon, intestines etc) than meets the eye. Science is ONLY NOW discovering this very vital link between mood, well being and the gut.
The gut is equipped with its OWN set of nerves, senses and reflexes and has over 100million neurotransmitters lining the 9 or so metres of organs. This is far more than the spinal cord so when you think of it THAT way, its just common sense that the gut plays a vital and pivotal role in your physical health but also your mental health and state of mind.
Over 95% of the bodyâs serotonin is actually found in the gut - NOT in the brain itself. When treating depression with SSRI anti-depressants, it has been found that the drugs have a direct effect on the gut itself. Irritable Bowel Syndrome as an example, is a common side effect of SSRI drugs & is caused by to much serotonin in the entrails part of the gut.
Studies have shown that babies who were given anti-biotics or absorbed them via their motherâs breast milk had dramatically decreased levels of healthy gut flora. The worrisome part of it is this; after 7 days of exposure to anti-biotics it has been found that the bodyâs negative responses can continue for a period of 2 years AFTER having taken the anti-biotics. Also, once the gut flora has been âkilledâ or healthy bacteria diminished by use of anti-biotics, it does NOT REGROW. The only way to correct the issue is to ingest pro-biotics DAILY, for the rest of your life.
Think about it: How can DEAD PLANT CELLS (fibre) create LIVING BACTERIA from simply being eaten???
In fact, what the HELL does ingesting dead plants have to do with gut bacteria at all? NOTHING! Absolutely nothing!
Its simply suggested as a way of âregulatingâ poos. If your gut bacteria is all but dead you either get VERY constipated or start urinating out your butt hole. So fibre is suggested to resolve the poo issue. But it doesnât resolve the gut issue - in fact it makes it far worse.
Hereâs another interesting thought to consider: Breast milk has zero fibre, yet healthy babies produce abundant amount of poo several times daily, given their size. Why is that I wonder? Could it be because motherâs inherently produce live bacteria via their breastmilk and that is ALL a baby needs for healthy gut function and quality poopage? Hmmm...
So, whatâs all this got to do with suddenly getting happy from NOT taking anti-biotics anymore?
Well, as I say, if youâve EVER taken anti-biotics, EVER in your life (at birth or beyond) then you have destroyed a vast number if not all, of the healthy, live bacteria in your gut that help to regulate just about every digestive & emotion response of the body.
Only ONE prescription, JUST ONE is enough to wipe out the entire live culture population of your gut. Thatâs it! All of it - gone. Never to return. They donât remake themselves from nothing - just like a human being canât remake an arm from nothing, these little critters canât just up & appear out of thin air. Once theyâre dead, theyâre dead.
To tie this all together for you; during fetal development your brain & your gut actually develop from the same clump on embryonic tissue. Got that - the SAME STUFF makes up your brain and gut from its very beginnings.
A healthy *untouched* gut contains over 100million neuro-transmitters that send messages to and from the brain and over 400 different species of living micro-organisms. These micro-organisms help to maintain healthy neuro-transmitters which line the entire gut from start to finish (9metres or more of non-stop message sending neuro-transmitters).
In addition to all that, which really is enough to understand why your gut function = your emotional responses... but WAIT - there IS more; nearly every BRAIN REGULATING CHEMICAL has been found in the gut. Iâm talking nearly ALL your feelgood ones like serotonin (the happiness and well being chemical) dopamine (the pleasure chemical), Norpinepherine (also known as noradrenalin which promotes fight or flight response in the body), benzodiazepine (the pain relief chemical and used for making Valium).
To help make sense of all this (it complex - I know. Trying to explain it easily is NOT easy let me tell you!) let me set out a couple of examples for you...
One example - dreams occur in the BRAIN, right? Well... not entirely.
Our brain and gut are so interconnected that both have natural 90-minute âsleep cycles.â In the brain, slow-wave sleep is interrupted by periods of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep during which dreams occur.
The gut has corresponding 90-minute cycles of slow-wave muscle contractions. But as with the brainâs REM sleep intervals, these cycles are interrupted by corresponding short bursts of rapid muscle movement.
And another example: pain relief comes from the brain... right? Again... not entirely.
The gut is a primary source of a pain relief chemical called benzodiazepine. So your second brain (the gut) produces all by itself, totally naturally, the substance found in many pain relievers, and anti-anxiety drugs like Valium. Why do you think hypnotherapy works when in labour? Youâre tricking the gut into releasing pain relief for you.
Being happy is a âmindsetâ therefore originates in the brain - right? Nope. Wrong again.
Although the serotonin levels of the brain play a role in the emotional stability of a person or their feeling of âwell beingâ, up to 95% of the bodyâs serotonin is actually in the gut. Yet we take anti-depressants with side effects of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation... We try to correct the serotonin imbalance to FEEL better & in doing so upset the place where 95% of the bodyâs serotonin is made & stored. Doesnât make sense, does it?
So, when the your GUT is suffering, namely from killing off the LIVE bacteria that enables it to function at optimal level, then everything else in your body suffers too: those 100million neurotransmitters donât function the way they should (so the majority of your neurotransmitters arenât performing - bound to make you feel shitty with life) your immune system doesnât protect you as well as it used to, your blood doesnât coagulate, your serotonin & other HAPPY chemical levels become imbalanced, your ability to withstand pain reduces, your stools lack moisture, and your colon gets irritable and inflamed... the list quite literally goes on and on.
There is a natural symphony of chemicals in the stomach region that balance our emotions, sleep, pain and energy. Without the right amount of healthy bacteria or LIVE flora in the gut, these chemicals become imbalanced affecting just about every psychological response of the brain.
Hence, anti-biotic use, even just once can play havoc for a lifetime with your emotions.
Once this healthy bacteria is killed off, it does not regenerate. It must be replaced. Ingestion of live bacteria culture products like pro-biotics are a good step in the right direction. I myself have been taking them (1 full teaspoon a day, every day with aloe juice with is soothing to inflamed colon tissue) & in under a week my anxiety symptoms are noticeably decreased. I feel calmer, less irritable - even when Iâve been up all night which for me is a nightmarish situation in the making.
NB: AVOID products like âActiviaâ and other âlive cultureâ injected foodstuffs. More often than not, any live cultures injected into the food stuff are killed off during the heat processing required to make the product safe for consumption. If youâre not sure, put some of a live culture product into a glass, cover with cling wrap & leave somewhere warm (next to heater for example) overnight. The next day the cling wrap should be puffed up from the fermentation process that is evident when cultures are still alive. No puffing? No live cultures. Forget it & get something that WORKS.
On a personal note, I have spent in the vicinity of six figures and nearly two decades on therapies, study, counselling, remedies, medications, courses, retreats and various other means of correcting the emotional imbalance it seemed I was born with.
Now it appears, thanks to the wonderfully holistic approach of my health team, that we have found the reason why... and weâre well on the way to fixing it.
So this post is because of my own research into my own conditions some of which have included chronic depression, anxiety disorders, adrenal fatigue, panic attacks and more.
Hopefully there is some information in this article that will help you too.
