The Oxford dictionary defines happiness as good fortune or luck. It is also related to success and prosperity. It speaks of a state of pleasant satisfaction with the circumstances of a person’s life.

So, we can conclude that happiness is an emotion that occurs in a conscious being when they reach a moment of contentment and well-being or have achieved specific goals.  However, anyone can give it a different meaning.

  • Seek out the good: simply look around yourself now. Tune in and magnify every tiny detail that your life is decorated with.
  • Reminding yourself of things you have: Notice things that you might take for granted. Find them and treasure them. It can be in the form of food, shelter, people, or community.
  • Start a journal: being committed to writing down what you appreciate will remind you continuously and notice the good things around you. The great thing is, if you’re having a low moment, reading back through your gratitude journal can be a great pick me up!
  • Follow a ritual: there are many gratitude rituals that we can practice, for example saying grace before a meal or thanking others for little gestures, being grateful for the time they’ve taken to help you or give you company.
  1. Savor your gratitudes: pause and notice when you are amazed by the little things in life. Count your blessings right there and then when they take place. These little moments fill you with gratitude and make your heart sing. Why not read some books on gratitude, they may show you even more ways to savor what you have.
  2. Verbalize your gratitude: You don’t have to express gratitude in an over the top way. Think of expressing your gratitude to someone as more of just good manners, but say it mindfully with feeling rather than an automatic thank you.  When you acknowledge someone it makes you feel good and them too! Spread the gratitude and joy, pay it forward.
  • Think about how you appreciate what they’ve done for you. Express your thankfulness to someone who made you happy or did something helpful for you in some way.
